JR East expects to generate enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for about 80 minutes per day.

I'm all for wacky green power schemes, but, uh, even if that's an incandescent bulb... that's not a big help.

Yeah, seriously. I had the same thought.
But then again, if it's enough to keep the ticket machines running in the case of brownouts, it might be worthwhile someday? Not counting R&D, production, installation and maintenance costs...

Uh, maybe we just mark it up to encouraging early prototypes of creative ideas. I am for that, as long as the precautionary principle is employed.

for whatever it's worth, it doesn't say how large the test patch actually is. if that much energy is coming from, say, a square meter of floor space -- and if they can manufacture more of the flooring at a reasonable price -- this is an enormous win.

Huh. You could be right. I've never been to Tokyo so I don't have a proper mental image of this, but I imagined it as all the way from before the turnstiles to the train. Something like at least 10 square yards.
